So, I've Been a Little Bit Busy!!!

Has it really been over a month since my last blog??? Ugh, that is totally unacceptable!!! However, I have a really good excuse why I have been MIA for the past couple of months!!!

I AM PREGNANT WITH TWINS!!!!!!!

These little guys have had me in quite a zombie state for some time now!! Most days I was barely able to sit up let alone sit at a desk to type a blog!!! So, I took a small but necessary break from the blogging world to rest and relax and grow a few babies!!!

I think this picture is absolutely the most precious thing!!! My husband and I are beyond thrilled to be expecting twins!! What an amazing adventure we are about to embark on as first time parents!!

I appreciate all of your patients while I have been taking my mini blog vacation. I can't promise daily blogs like before, but I will try to do better!!!!

New Projects a Show and a Store

I am gearing up for another craft show tomorrow! I have added a few new items and am hopeful they will be well recieved! This is a new show for SDG, I am excited to see how it goes!!

I am also super excited to announce that SDG products are going to be sold in a local shop!!! I am thrilled and flattered that the store owned took such a liking to my products! They should be in her store in the next few weeks or so!! YEAH!! Selling them in boutiques was kind of my long term goal! I am super excited to see that happening so soon!

The store owner also approached me with a special project, making large tote bags. YEESH!!! I have never made a tote bag to be honest. Sure, I can sew, but these are large and she needs 30!! But what an amazing challenge and a great project for me!! So, I am considering it. Searching for patterns and ideas to create these masterpieces!! Making 30 bags should keep me busy for a few days...or the entire summer!!! I'll be sure to keep you all posted on the progress! Should be interesting!!

And I can't blog without wishing all of you moms and soon to be moms a VERY Happy Mothers Day!!!! I know I owe SOOO much to my mom! She is amazing, smart, funny and beautiful!! Thank you mom for being so great!! I love you!!!

Tracery Interiors

As I have mentioned about 100 times, I love Rosemary Beach Florida. It is such a beautiful and serene place to visit. Not to mention the home of one of my favorite design teams Tracery Interiors. Not only are they amazing designers, they also have a beautiful store! (And they write an inspiring blog! Busy busy!!) Their work is creative and coastal and amazing!! I can't say enough about it, they are very talented!!

I popped over to their blog this morning and saw some new displays they have right now in their store. UGH, I love them!! I feel like I could just walk in their store and live! So beautiful! Is that weird that I want to live in a store?? Oh well, I am sure you all have stores you would live in to?! Right??? Hello?? Anyway, if you have a moment, take a look at their website/blog. Just keep a tissue handy to wipe away the drool!!

Cool and Crisp

I must confess to you...white scares me!! Whenever I wear white pants, I get food on them. White carpet, I spill drinks. But I love it so! I love the look of a crisp white shirt in the summer. I really love the look of these crisp white walls, accessories and furniture. So fresh, it just screams cool and hip. But what really caught my eye are the pops of bright blue/turquoise. What a great way to compliment white and what a great color to use for summer!! Looks cool and that is always good on a hot summer day!!!

Open Shelving and Display in Kitchens

I try pretty hard to keep my kitchen and my cabinets clean and tidy. I TRY! I could not imagine having my dishes and all my cooking utensils on display all the time. However, I do really like the way it looks! Maybe it would give me more incentive to keep things orderly!

I love the thought of using brightly colored plates and bowls to add color and interest to a kitchen. Plus, if you have a unique collection of plates or mugs, etc. it would be such an easy way to display it for all to see!

I think for now, I will keep my white dishes tucked away in a cabinet! I don't think I am ready to commit to keeping things THAT organized!!!

Clever Idea!!!

Oh, I just love this idea!!! If you are like me, you have one or two glass domes and not a thing to put in them! Some days I struggle to come up with a creative ways to display items in my home. It really never occurred to me to use light bulbs in this way!!! But I am in love with the idea!!!!!

I haven't blogged but once this week. Ugh, sorry, I was doing so well! I have been taking a much needed break, trying to relax, and just enjoy the days. I have been reading some good books, watching lots of reality television and going to lunch with my newly retired dad. The weather has been amazing and I have been sitting on my back porch enjoying lazy evenings watching my dog tangle himself up in the blooming flowers and watching my husband obsessively put fertilizer on our yard. I have been eating the best cookies, full of chocolate and ooey, gooey goodness and not working out! The past few weeks have been much needed. I am grateful that I was able to take this time and enjoy the simple things in life. It made me realize I need to do that more often! I hope you all are taking time to relax and enjoy something special this weekend!!! (I really hope it is a chocolate cookie!!!)

Ahhhh.....Spring!

Ahhhh.....Spring!!! It is so nice to have warmer weather and to actually feel like stepping outside of your house to go somewhere!! It feels good to have my newly polished toenails exposed in my flip flops, and to not have a huge coat on while driving. It is nice to sit out on the porch at night and not need a jacket, and to have sunlight until at least 8:30 pm! How amazing to see the bulb I planted in the fall finally bloom into a daffodil and the tree in front of our house bloom a beautiful soft pink flower. How funny it is to watch my husband OBSESS about our yard and picking weeds and fertilizing! And how sweet to have amazing family and friends to spend time with on these beautiful days!!

I have been taking some time off the past week. Sorry for the lack of blog posts, I have just been a little pre-occupied!!!

At Final Four practice with Mr. Peanut!! The only celebrity I saw that day!!!

This guy is pretty amazing and sweet. I have been trying to spend a lot of time with him lately, when he is not out in the yard!!!

I recently came across this kitchen in an issue of House Beautiful. Don't you just LOVE those big windows!!!?? What a great place to cook in as well as entertain! The long bench seating would be great for a family dinner or a dinner party. I like how simple the colors are and how the decor is pretty minimal. What I really love are those green vases on the table!! Those are fabulous and just the right pop of color!!! I wonder where I could get my hands on those???!!!

Can you imagine how tasty breakfast would be in this little nook?? Oh, I can just imagine waking up to the smell of cinnamon rolls and coffee and sinking into those green pillows. (Not that this kind of thing EVER happens at my house, but a girl can dream!!!)

I love the color combo, so great for spring! And those wire chairs are so sweet! And that light!! OH!! It's too much!!!

So...it is supposed to be like 80 degrees today!! WHAT? I feel so unprepared for this weather! I am still in "sweater and jeans season"!!! I have looked through my closet and feel that I just don't have what I need for this weather!! What is a girl to do??? Well, online shop of course!!!! HEHE!!! One of my favorite stores in Ann Taylor LOFT. LOVE IT! They usually have a great selection, plus, they have an AWESOME petite selection,which I need! I can always find something fun and fabulous at their store!

Today, I did a little online "window shopping" (we don't have one at our mall! can you believe that??) I found a few cute items that might need to make an appearance in my closet very soon!! (Just don't tell hubby!)

Why Is This So Hard?? UGH!

I always thought of myself as someone who is overly organized. I always know what time and where things are without looking at my calendar and I am always on time. My home is always clean and picked up (for the most part, I am human). I know where everything is and everything has a place. My personal life is always organized and working like a well oiled machine. Then I started a business.

Over the past 3 years, I have run and operated a business from my home. I love it, I love being the boss and setting my own hours and being in charge. I love being the lead designer on all my projects and knowing that it is MY work. What I don't love is all the paperwork and all the files and random busy-work I have to keep up with. They don't teach you how to organize that stuff in college. They don't tell you about all the tax stuff you will have to keep up with and all the junk that you will have to mail and file. UGH! Not fun at all!! It doesn't help that I am completely and utterly scattered when it comes to organizing my work life. My office is neat and tidy, but I am not sure where anything is!

I feel like a fool. Shouldn't it be easy to stay on top of things? I am so organized in other areas of my life, why is this so hard? Why can't I stay on task?? What is wrong with me??
So, I've decided to make it my #1 "work goal". I WILL get organized! I am a smart person, I can do this!! And I am inviting all of you who feel unorganized to join me in my adventure!! If you are struggling to stay organized in some way, then let's get organized!!!

I found these blogs that I think will be a huge help to get me started. Lot's of great tips and ideas!! I actually really love organization, I just have a hard time doing it for myself!! (I love office supply stores, how can this be??)

Hi there!! I am soooo happy it is Friday!!! Looking forward to a relaxing weekend, getting my hair done and celebrating my Dad's birthday!! Each year I make my dad a special carrot cake from scratch! It is actually the only time I make it, and I gotta say, it is so tasty!!! My mouth is watering just thinking about the cream cheese frosting!! YUM!!!

Good For What???

I loose something in my purse on pretty much a daily basis. I can't find my phone, my keys, my gum. Each day presents a new challenge when I try to leave the house. My "winter" purse is somewhat large and very deep. I love this about my purse. However, I hate that I can't find things easily. My phone is ringing, but where is it?? UGH!!!! Very frustrating!! I know I am not alone in this frustration. I know many of you are reading this and shaking your head saying "yes, I feel the same way"!! This frustration was one of the many reasons that led me to make my ever so cute zipper pouches. I wanted to do my part to make this a better world!! HEHE!!!!

So, I tried out my bags and found that YES they will hold A LOT of "stuff"! Anything really that you can fit in your purse (within reason of course). They are great for coupons, which I am FOREVER loosing in my purse. (I do usually find them when I get home and don't need them anymore!!) The pouches make great make-up bags for your purse or for travel. You can use them to organize all the little items in your purse as well, phone, gum, pens. You will always know exactly where things are!

You will also notice a few new items below. Hopefully they will be listed soon in the shop. (Until then, if you are interested in any of them, please let me know!) The mini bags are such a great size and super cute. They are great for gift cards and credit cards, perfect size for those. They are really nice for jewelry to. Good for your purse or suitcase if traveling. Most small digital cameras fit inside, as do some cell phones. Speaking of cell phones...did you see my cute iPhone/iPod/call phone cases??? YEAH!!! These are pretty stinking cute and the perfect size for your purse (or to fit inside an SDG bag!!). Again, hoping to have these listed in the shop soon!!!

I could literally go on for hours about the great uses for an SDG bag!!! The possibilities are endless!! And if you are a crazy organizer like me, you will be in love!! Your purse will be so happy and clean!!!

Dining Room Lighting

It is finally starting to look like someone lives in our house!! Whoo!!! This seems to have taken a long time to make decisions and get things done! But it is SOOOO worth it!!! We are really enjoying the "new" spaces in our home.

I wanted to show you the new light fixture we put up in the dining room. As you know, we recently made a trek to the Ballard Designs outlet in West Chester Ohio (LOVE IT). We purchased this lighting fixture with the outlet discount as well as an additional 40% off!! WOOHOO!! And we could finally replace the "thing" that was there when we moved in (see below).

It looks really beautiful at night (sorry for my daytime snapshots). And forgive me for not showing you the rest of the room, it was not quite ready for its close up yet!! It provides just the right amount of light for a fabulous dinner party!! I love the lantern style, exactly what I was looking for!!

BIG thanks to my awesome hubby!! Not only did he drive me to Ohio, shop with me and load all the purchases in the car, but he also hung the light!! THANK YOU!!!

Craft Show Re-Cap

We had such a great time at the craft show we did this past weekend!! I think it was a huge success, we sold some items and we got our first show under our belts. I feel a lot better going into the next show for sure!

The only bad part was the building we were in!! Obviously, you can see from the pictures that the "decor" (or lack there of) was not really my style!! HEHE!! It was sort of a lodge feel. And, it was FREEZING (in the building, not outside). So that made for somewhat of a long day on my end.

Overall, it was fun and I received a lot of wonderful feedback from customers. I also got a lot of requests for various items that I don't currently make. So, if any of you have ideas of items you would like to see in the shop, please let me know!

NERVOUS!!!

I have a confession...I am nervous! This Saturday is my FIRST real craft fair. I am actually doing a craft fair! AHH!!! I am totally prepared with all my bags and goodies and my display items. However, mentally, I am a wreck! It is a big deal for me to put myself out there in this way.

I am an interior designer, I have been for 10 years. I went to college for it, I have studied and practiced design for so long. It is what I know, it is my comfort zone. I design everyday, so what am I doing making bags, let alone selling them??? What am I doing here???

Sewing started out as a hobby, a way to pass time and a way to cut the stress I was feeling. I could sew and totally go into a zone and hours would pass and I would forget all the things that I was stressed out about. Before I knew it, I went from sewing pillows to bags. LOT'S of cute little zippered bags. I wasn't quite sure what to do with the little creations. I was fully aware that people sell things like this everyday. I search on etsy for hours sometimes looking at all the cute little pouches. I am a devoted Vera Bradley bag carrier. I know that women (and some men) carry these zipper pouches everyday.

I started thinking about selling them. It made me nervous. It made me excited at the thought of starting another small business. But could I do it? Could I maintain my interior design business and all my clients while sewing and selling my little creations? Could I really put myself out there and let people see what I was making?? Could I really do that???

Yes!!

And so I did. It happened very quickly. My amazing husband helped me design my website and that was that. I was making and selling zippered pouches and other objects of goodness!! (You'll see them soon enough.) Soon, I signed up to do a craft show.

I have had a great response to my bags so far, and I have sold quite a few to date. But a craft show??? That makes me really nervous. All my items out on display for people to see and touch and look closely at!! Will they like them?? Will they want to carry them?? Will people see how much I love making them??? I guess we will see on Saturday!!!

I was also really nervous to start this business. I worry that I won't be taken seriously and that my interior design business will suffer. I am still learning the right balance between the two. So far, I am doing quite well balancing my time between the two. And I see future growth for both, which is really exciting for me to watch!!

I am nervous, I can't lie. I love what I am doing right now and I believe in my product. I am still learning and growing and developing my unique style. It will change and evolve as my business grows.

I am excited for my craft show this weekend, even though I am nervous. I know it will be great fun and a success no matter what. This is completely out of my comfort zone, and so this is a huge accomplishment for me!!

I hope that if any of you have suggestions for new styles or new ideas, you will let me know!! I love feedback and constructive criticism and would appreciate any and all you have to give me!!!

The Wait is Over!!!!!!

That's right people, I HAVE FURNITURE!!!!! (Well, I had furniture in the rest of the house, just not this room!!!) We finally made a decision and bought a sofa!! And chairs and an ottoman, a table and lamps! I am still in complete shock when I walk past this room! I want to sit in it all day and just look at it!! And it is NOT finished YET! I still need to add the "fluff" to the room and make it all "purty"!!! But I can at least sit in the room now and that feels amazing!!!

We actually ended up buying the sofa at a local furniture store, right off the floor! I wasn't planning to do that, but when we saw it we knew that it was perfect for the space.

The chairs are the real shocker of the room. I never planned to get leather, let alone swivel club chairs, but they work and they fit the space perfectly. (And they are super cute and cozy!) The chairs are from Gradin Road. The ottoman, also from Gradin Road is my favorite thing! We have no animal print in our house (besides Oliver's coat) and it is just the right pop of fun! The tables are also from Gradin Road. Lamps are from the Ballard Designs outlet and Pier One. The table lamps are a design selection by the husband, I think he did a pretty good job!!

We still have a HUGE mirror to hang somewhere and artwork to find and window treatments to select and electric cords to hide. But the major step is over!! Now it feels like a real grown up house! I have to say, this room is completely different from anything we have in our home. It is a complete departure from my normal style, and I love it!!!!

Ladies and gentleman, we HAVE FURNITURE!!!!!!

I can't even stand it!! I actually have furniture in my formal living room!! I am still a little bit in shock, so forgive my excessive amount of exclamation points!! It has just been such a long road to get here!!

Saturday morning, the husband and I headed over to West Chester Ohio to visit one of my favorite places, the Ballard Designs outlet and the Grandin Road outlet. I am always so overwhelmed with the selection and the awesome prices. Both stores are FULL of great furniture and accessories right out of the catalog.

Grandin Road offers really great outlet prices and that day everything was an additional 50% off!! Gotta love that!! (I know the husband does!) Ballard had an additional 40% off all lighting, so along with furniture for my living room, I also scored a light fixture for my dining room!! Can you stnad it?? I can't!

Unfortunately, I was so excited and so in "the zone" that I forgot to take any pictures of the day!! I will take pictures of the furniture in the room and post pictures later this week!

I hope you all have a happy Monday!! I know I will! I plan to sit in my living room all day!!!

What is Making Me Happy Today!!

Happy Friday everyone!!! I for one am so happy that the weekend is here!!! This has been a really great week and very busy to!! Which I love!!! To bad the weather is gloomy and gross today (March is not my favorite month, all the rain and storms). We had the most amazing weather this week, sunny and in the 70's! Crazy!!

I have a lot to be happy about in general! I am a really blessed gal!!! But I wanted to share a few things I am REALLY happy about today!!!

First of all, I LOVE daffodils in the spring!! They are my favorite spring flower and I usually buy bunches of them and scatter them all over my house!! While grocery shopping yesterday I spotted my yellow friends and put a bunch in the cart. Most of the bunches were closed up tight, so I only bought one bunch this week. But look at what I woke up to this morning!!! Now this will get your day started off right!!!

This has been a really busy week of preparing for a client meeting (today) and sewing new things for the shop as well as a show I am doing next weekend. I wanted to "stock up" my shelves and have a good inventory going into my first show. I created bags in sets of 3. These would be great for traveling. You can hold so much in these bags it is insane!! I love the combo creation as well. Wouldn't his make the best gift???

These are my small and mini sized zipper pouches. I don't have a lot of these in the shop, but plan to add some next week. I love how simple they are, but they are so functional. The small size can be a make up bag, a coupon holder, a purse organizer, a baby bag organizer, just about any old thing you want to do with it!!! The mini bag can hold gift cards, credit cards, change, your phone, lipsticks, so many fun uses!!!

I also made a few new items yesterday!!! I don't want to tell you just yet what they are, but they are really fun!! Both fit in your purse and both are super functional!! You will just have to check back in here and in the shop for a peak at those pretties!!! I am making more today and hopefully will share them with you next week!!!

Oh Baby!!

If I didn't already have "baby" on the brain, I sure do now!!! These nurseries are to die for!! They are sweet and playful but chic and almost "adult" like in the color and fabric selections. I love how unique the bedding is in both rooms. It is not the typical bears playing with a kite fabric you find in a lot of children's bedding. I like these rooms because they are "cute" without being "too cute". Does that make sense?? Anyway, these are to very lucky little babies that get to live in these rooms. I have an empty bedroom just waiting for a baby!! I am putting these pictures in my nursery file for sure!!!!

Is it Tile or Wood??

Have you ever thought about using a tile with texture?? Sounds kind of weird right? Usually tile has a smooth finish, and that is why most people opt for tile and not hardwood floors. While shopping for a clients floor, I came across tiles that look like wood flooring. I wasn't completely convinced, so I ordered a few samples. This stuff really feels like wood! It has so much texture and variation in the surface. It is really deceiving to look at.

The tiles are Urban Timber and it is from Mission Stone and Tile. They have a great selection of other styles, but I was really impressed by this collection!!

Ask Me Anything (Almost Anything)!!

This has been a really crazy couple of weeks. Not only am I trying to keep up with all of my design clients, but I am also trying to launch a new business venture. The new venture is taking A LOT of my time (which I love). But I still want to keep my blog fun and entertaining!!

I love reading blogs where I learn about the person who is posting it. I like that they allow me to take a peak into their day to day lives.

Textured Wallpaper

These 3 rooms are fabulous!! The colors and the lighting and the accessories, fabulous!! But the one thing that really caught my eye was the textured wallpaper. If these rooms didn't have a coastal feel before the paper went up, they certainly do now!! I just want to run my hand up and down the wall, it just looks great!! It adds a nice warmth to the rooms as most of the furniture and accessories are white and pastel and cold looking.

I see a lot of really amazing pieces of furniture in these rooms to. The pictures are from Coastal Living, so of course the rooms are wonderful!!!!

I love when I can give my readers a chance to win some really special items!!! I recently became blog/e-mail friends with Valerie of Next to Heaven. Her blog is super fun and she is just a great girl and I really glad we have become friends!

Valerie is an extremely talented artist and designs really fabulous jewelry for her etsy shop Spunk & Sass. As you can see from the pictures, her stuff is fantastic!! I was lucky enough to receive a hand stamped necklace with my initials from Valerie a few weeks ago. (We did a little product swap. She is the first person to own an original SDG bag!!) I honestly have been wearing this necklace daily. Not only is it pretty, but it goes with everything! It is simple yet elegant and I love it!! ( I also bought the Birds Nest ring from her shop. Give me (and my readers) a little background on yourself.

Howdy! My name is Valerie. I’m in my mid-twenties and married to my high school sweetheart. I currently work an 8-5 job, which doesn’t allow for much creativity, so crafting is my creative outlet. I’m very much an outdoorsy kinda gal and I love adventures. I’m also a DIY believer. I love to see what kinds of things I can make myself. I’m loud, spunky, and love to have fun!

How long have you been creating jewelry?

I started making jewelry in college as a hobby to get away from studying. I think I started in 2005. After college though, is when I really got into making jewelry and learning new techniques. So I guess roughly, I’m going on 5 years!

What do you enjoy most about creating jewelry?

I love the freedom in it. I can sit down with my beads and findings surrounding me and just go to work. When I see different beads, ideas pop into my head and new jewelry is born. Making jewelry is such a huge creative outlet and I really enjoy seeing all the different pieces I come up with. I personally love it when I wear my creations and people rave about it wanting to know where I got it. Then I can say “Oh, I made it!” I love the look on their faces. It really makes my day.

What inspires your designs?

I’m all over the board with inspiration. I get ideas while shopping online and in-stores a lot of the time. That was actually the whole premise for me making jewelry: I wanted to be able to make the things I saw and liked, but for a lot better price. I also get inspiration from outfits I wear: What would look good? What would just “make” this outfit? etc. etc. Beads and other findings also help fuel inspiration. I’ll see a few beads or one little charm and a whole new idea is formed. So really I get ideas from everywhere!

When and why did you decide to open an etsy shop?

As I started getting better with my jewelry making, several friends made comments that I needed to sell my jewelry. Around this time I became familiar with Etsy and I kept having the urge to go ahead and give it a try. I started out making jewelry for myself and as gifts to friends, but I thought that if I could have people all over the world wearing my jewelry, what a cool feeling that would be.
I also taught my best friend about jewelry making and we decided to open the store together since we both shared a love for crafting. You really can’t go wrong by doing something you love.

You have a fabulous blog! What do you enjoy most about blogging??

I love being able to share my life stories and connecting with other like and non-like individuals. My blog started mostly as an online journal for me to babble or complain, but then it warped into a hobby that I absolutely love doing. Writing has always been a good release for me. I never would have thought, though, that my blog would become what it is today. That people would actually read what I have to say and continue coming back every single day. So not only do I love writing, but I love meeting new and fabulous people in the blogging community. It’s an amazing support network!

Where do you see Spunk and Sass in one year??

In one year I hope Spunk & Sass is still thriving. We have our busy times and our slow times and really that’s OK. I’d love to see us with double the sales we have now and have a little more online awareness, but, really, if we’re still selling jewelry occasionally, then that’s all I can ask for. I’m doing something I love and I’m sharing it with the world. If someone buys it, then that’s a bonus for us!

Read any good books lately??

I recently joined goodreads.com and have found a few books that I don’t know I would have found otherwise. I read The Girl She Used to Be by David Cristofano and more recently I’ve been addicted to the Sookie Stackhouse books, which the HBO series, True Blood, is based off of and I really love it. They are a bit more grown up than Twilight, which I still love by the way, but it’s different with more intense situations. I’ve become quite the little bookworm lately, so if you’re on Good Reads then let’s be friends.

Favorite food?

My favorite type of food is Mexican food. I love chips and salsa as well as some good cheese enchiladas! Oh yes, and don’t forget the strawberry margarita!

Favorite song?

I love music. My favorite slow song is You’re My Witness by Clay Walker, which was my first dance song with my husband at our wedding. It’s such a beautiful song. My favorite up beat song is I Gotta Feeling by The Black Eyed Peas. It, without fail, puts me in a good mood!

Favorite thing to do to relax?

I love cuddling up on the couch with my husband and catching up on our favorite shows. If I’m not couch-potatoing-it, then making jewelry or reading is great relaxation for me.

My New Adventure!!!

Some time ago, I decided it would be a great idea for me to dust off my sewing machine and try out a new hobby. I bought some scrap fabric and attempted to make a pillow. Which proved to be a little harder than I thought it would, but a pillow was made (with no pattern) and it was cute and I had a great time making it.

Hmmm....So I made another one, and another and two sets and a few others. All without a pattern, all crazy colors and pieced together material and it was awesome! My husband, who loves to encourage these kinds of activities, suggested that I should try and sell them. WHAT??? That seems a little crazy husband!!! But, he was very convincing and I gave it serious thought.

In the mean time, I set out to make some other creations. One of which was a small zipper bag, which I felt was very ambitious as I had NEVER sewn a zipper before. After about 3 failed attempts, I had a perfect little zipper pouch!! WOW!! That was really fun. Then I started experimenting with various fabrics and styles and thought more about what my husband had said. How awesome would it be to turn a hobby into a job?? I love sewing, and I love fabrics, I could totally do that!!! And so...

I DID!!!

I am happy to introduce to you SDG!!! Fun, cute and super functional zipper bags, small clutches and purses. (I also am working on a few other items, but you will have to keep coming back to find out about those!!) I am so thrilled and so excited to be able to do something so creative and fun!!! I hope you all enjoy my creations (and I hope you will spread the word!!!)

Living Room Inspiration

You all know my struggle to fill my formal living with furniture. I think we are slowly moving closer to making some decisions (and I cannot tell you how excited that makes me!!!). Ugh, that room will send me to the nuthouse one of these days if we don't get something in there soon!! I'm serious! (Maybe not, but when hubby reads this, I want him to really feel the urgency in my message!!)

I found this picture a few weeks ago. (I apologize, I have no idea who designed this or where I found it, I just put it in my file and forgot to label it! Sorry!) I love the simplicity of this space. Its clean and classic and really inspiring to me. And I am in love with that light!! It's fabulous!!

Maybe someday soon I will post pictures of a finished room. You will see me lounging on my new sofa, reading a novel and looking very fancy and sophisticated. (Or maybe I will actually be in my jammies, reading US weekly and throwing Oliver's rope!)

Raising Awareness, My Story

This week is National Eating Disorder Awareness week. This is a week that I dread and look forward to each year. I look forward to it because it raises awareness for a deadly disease that often gets overlooked in the medical community. I dread this week because it forces me to recall a time in my life when I suffered from this deadly disease.

I was 22 when I became anorexic. I had just moved to Florida, and started my design career. I lived literally a block from the ocean and finally in the same state as the man I would someday marry. It began very gradual, restricting my food intake here and there. I started running, a hobby that I had always hated. Soon I would begin writing down every morsel that touched my lips, down to each piece of gum. I knew the caloric content of EVERYTHING and I kept a tally of the days calories each night. I became very moody, mean and hateful. I would withdrawal from friends and family, even my boyfriend. All I could think about was when I would run next, what I would eat and how many calories it had. My work suffered, I could barely stand up or pay attention. I went from a bubbly 22 year old to a mean and bitter person in a matter of months. Physically I was all skin and bones. I was freezing all the time and tired. My hair began to fall out and my skin was gray. Weekends that should have been fun and exciting became miserable and overwhelming. My parents were scared to death and didn't know what to do. I avoided my boyfriend as much as possible as he was tyring anything and everything to get me to eat.

I eventually gave in and started seeing a therapist to make everyone happy. I lied and told her I was getting so much better every week. Clearly, I was fading away and she could see that. I was so far gone that she threatened to have me committed if I didn't get help. I wasn't about to get help, but for some reason, I told my parents and my boyfriend what she had said. My parents were in Florida the next day and I went home with them for over 3 months to try and get better. Before I left Florida, I saw a doctor who did some tests. She said I was about a week away from a heart attack. I was 23. I had to gain 25 pounds before my parents would even consider taking me back to Florida. I gained the weight, but kept the disorder.

My boyfriend proposed and we were married a year later. I was somewhat healthy throughout this time, but my demon was still there. I was still exercising compulsively mentally keeping a tally of what I ate. Still trapped by the chains of my disorder. We moved to California and I struggled most of the 2 years we lived there. Always keeping my weight up enough to not "look" sick, but inside, slowly falling apart. We then moved to Minnesota. After getting so sick again that I quit my job, I sought treatment from an eating disorder clinic. It was there that I finally had something click and realized how sick I really was.

I wanted so badly to have children, and I knew that I couldn't. I knew that I had lost so many years of my life hiding with my disorder. I had shut myself off from my friends and family and lost a part of myself that I desperately wanted to get back. My soul felt empty and I had little emotion for anything. I was a shell. I wanted to live and I wanted to be happy, but I had lost that spark that made me Meredith. I wasn't myself anymore and that scared me to death. I looked in the mirror and barely recognized myself. My face was so thin and sad, the twinkle in my eye was gone.

I battled my eating disorder for over 7 years. For the most part keeping it very quite. At my lowest weight, the night that my parents came to get me, I had lost so much muscle in my face that I could barely smile anymore. I had blacked out a few times and most of the time I could barely feel my body I was so cold. I have damaged my hips and my lower back from running so much.

While in treatment, I learned a lot about myself and why I was doing this. There really isn't a concrete answer. I was never abused as a child, my parents love me and support me and are my best friends. My husband is amazing and has loved me through good times and very bad times. My friends are sweet and funny and caring people. I am a good, smart and funny person. I had no reason to hate myself so much that I would starve myself. I have some ideas of why this happened.

I have been recovered for about 2 years now. I can honestly say that I don't think about my eating disorder everyday like I used to. I will always have to watch it, but I don't struggle with it anymore. I am not "cured" but I feel like I am "better". I don't struggle with food or exercise anymore. I feel "normal" and whole again. I feel like myself again and I am so happy to be back!! I kind of missed myself!! And I have no idea how much I weigh. I do not weigh myself at home, and I ask the nurse at the doctors office to keep it to herself (I turn my back to the scale). Its pretty liberating not knowing!!

I used to ask myself all the time why God would give me such an awful disease. Why would He do this to me?? I now feel in some ways that this was a blessing. Weird to say that, but I do feel that way. It forced me to have to be strong and stand up to a demon. It forced me to take a better look at myself and what I want out of life. It prepared me to deal with struggles in my life. It made me see how precious life is and who and what really matter to me in this world. I know what my goals are, and I am more ready now to achieve them than ever before!

I wouldn't have been able to do it without the love and support of my family and friends. First off, my husband. I was horrible to him and he never gave up on me. He stood by me and loved me just the same. I thank God everyday for him!! My parents are amazing! I can't thank them enough for all they did for me. (I have tried!) I was pretty mean to them to, I think I threw a candy bar at my mom once!! (Sorry!) They love and support me so much, and I am blessed to have them as my parents! My parents gave me Oliver while I was sick. I call him my little angel because he loves me no matter what and I believe he is just sent from up above! He would sleep with me all day while I was recovering and on bed rest. (Bed rest was to get me to gain weight and rest my body.) Little Oliver never left my side. I have to thank my therapist and nutritionist in Minnesota. They made me dig deep down into what was going on. And they helped me enjoy food again!! Which I so love!!!

There is so much more to this story, more than I could or should put in a blog. I guess my mission here is to just raise awareness. It's not just a disease that affects young girls and teenagers. I was 22 when mine started and there are plenty of people that battle this that are much older than that. I just wanted to share a part of my story in hopes that it might help someone who is struggling. You are not alone. Happy Tuesday!!!!

I hope you all had a fabulous and relaxing weekend!!! I worked this weekend, but it was fun and didn't seem like work to me at all!! I guess that is a good sign??!!Any who, I found this picture and I was IN LOVE!! I LOVE everything, right down to the pink umbrella!! I love how clean and organized this little space is!! The crisp white storage boxes, the pops of bright green on rich brown.

I just can't even get words out right now! I never thought it would be possible to love an entryway, but I so do!!!! The best part is, this looks fairly easy to accomplish!! Wooden shelves, white boxes, easy!!! T he hard part, keeping it looking this way with a dog, a husband and piles of snow and mud that get tracked in my house on a daily basis!!! Oh, a girl can dream right??!!!

I recently started working with a client who want me to design a modern/contemporary kitchen. Typically, most of my clients tend to be on the traditional side. No reason for it, I actually have done all kinds of design in my career. I began going back to past projects and researching online for inspiration for this project. I came across these stunning pictures. It is the flat of Danish designer Nina Kejser and her Italian husband Mario Iadanza in the small town of Charlottenlund just north of Copenhagen. Beautiful! I love how fresh and crisp the white is. It is sleek and modern but still looks warm and welcoming. I am liking this A LOT!! I could cook in here!!

PINK!!!

After I posted a blog a week ago on the color blue, I felt it was only fair for me to post a blog on pink! Ah pink, you old friend!! Growing up, I think pink was one of my staple colors. As I have mentioned before my room was pink from ceiling to floor. Pink carpet, wallpaper, window treatments. I thought pink was absolutely the best color to choose for ALL my decorating needs!! (And let's get real, it still kind of IS one f the best colors!! Right???) And how could you NOT love pink and brown together!!?? The richness and depth, so pretty. The picture below I think pretty well sums up the awesomeness that is pink! Yes, I said awesomeness!! Its ok, its a word (I think). I think both of the rooms below show how pink can be used in a tasteful yet playful way. I could totally seem myself lounging in wither of these rooms, wearing pink, drinking a cosmo, very chic! I guess it is hard for me to let that part of my childhood go. I don't think I will ever get tired of a little pink now and then! Can you imagine if I ever have a little girl?? What will my poor husband do???!!!

Goodbye Fabric Books!!

A few weeks ago when I decided to clean out my office and paint, that meant I had to carry hundreds and hundreds of fabric books out of the room. UGH!! This is a very long and tedious process. Over the past year I have collected quite a collection of fabric and trim books. Some of them I use ALL the time and others I had to knock dust off of. It got me thinking about my fabric needs and how little space I really have in my office for shelves of books. While it is nice to have such a selection of amazing fabric books, I just don't NEED all this stuff!! It was time to make some hard decisions. I had to part with some of the books!!! This is really hard for me as I LOVE fabric and having it surrounding me in my office is truly inspiring. However, I felt like the walls were closing in on me!! After looking through 100's of books, literally, I ended up with only one shelving unit full of books!! Its amazing and my office is HUGE now!! I love it!! And I am left with the books I use the most and still inspire me!!

If any of you are looking for fabric or have a fabric that is "to the trade only" please let me know!! I would love to help you out!!! What good is being "the trade" if I can't help people out!!!

My personal style is cozy chic. I love to dress up, but I am usually in jeans most days. I try to spice everything up with fun jewelry or a great bag.

A watch and earrings. I feel naked without both. I have these great silver earrings my mom and dad bought me for my birthday and they are a staple piece. I also cannot go anywhere without my wedding and engagement rings. LOVE THEM!!

Jeans and sweaters! I love winter because I LOVE sweaters!! Can't get enough of them!! So cozy and warm. I also love to wear sun dresses. I feel so light and frilly in them!

Um... Lots of things. Hard for me to narrow that down. I read lots of different things. Some of my favorites, Secret Lives of Bees, Dive from Clausens Pier, Seaglass, To Kill a Mocking Bird, Devil Wears Prada, The Nanny, She's Come Undone, While You Were Gone, My Sisters Keeper, The Glass Castle. I also read a lot of fashion and design magazines.

WARNING: This blog may get extra mushy...read with caution!!!

I knew I was going to marry my husband the night that I met him. (Don't ask me why, he couldn't even remember what my name was!!) But I just knew it, I felt it. I felt that spark and that connection that you hope to find with someone. He looked at me in a way that made me melt and made me feel like we were the only people in the world at that moment. It was pure bliss. After the night we met, I didn't see him again for 6 months. We got to know each other through phone calls and e-mails. We became friends, after awhile, best friends. I looked forward to each and every e-mail. And when he would call me on the phone, my heart would race and I would smile for hours after we hung up. 6 months passed and we had our first "real" date. I was nervous for days about seeing him again. Would he still like me?? Would I still like him?? Would that "spark" still be there?? The spark was definitely still there! As we hugged and he kissed me on the cheek, I felt all the same feelings for him I had felt 6 months ago. He was my other half, my soul mate and when I was with him I felt complete.

Fast forward 4 years and I was walking down the aisle to the man of my dreams, my best friend. How lucky and blessed I am to have this amazing person in my life each and every day. He supports, loves, protects and cares for me. He challenges me, makes me want to be a better person and makes me laugh on a daily basis. I can't say enough good things about my amazing husband!!

Thank you for being who you are and for loving me the way you do!!! Happy Valentines Day Hubby!!!!

And I can't do a post about love and mush without mentioning my other "other" half!! My sweet little Oliver. He bites at my feet, steals food off my plate when I am not looking and goes to the bathroom on the floor I have just mopped. But I know I am the love of his life!! This little guy has given me so much joy over the years and I am truly blessed that we found each other!! Happy Valentines Day Oliver!!!

I have been blogging for a little over a year now. At first, I was completely lost in a sea of blogging. Not sure what to write or what to say. (I still find myself struggling at time!! But you I bet you can see that!!) I am still finding my voice in the world of blogging. I have to say, there are days when I have no clue WHAT to write about or to say. But, I am learning and trying to figure that out. I want my blog to be one that people look forward to reading each day. I want my blog to be fun and light hearted but provide some sort of useful information. However, my information may not always be super useful!! It may just be a funny story or a cute picture of my dog!! Which let's face it, he is SUPER cute!!! Anyway, I hope that whomever is reading my blog enjoys it and wants to read it. I hope I am providing some form of entertainment as well as information.I really enjoy blogging. It allows me to share part of my life and it also acts as a creative outlet for me. That is really important for us creative types!!

My favorite part of blogging is having the chance to "meet" incredible and interesting people that I might not have otherwise been able to meet. There are A LOT of talented and inspiring women out there and I feel really blessed that they write a blog and share their lives with me and their other readers each day. Pretty cool!!

Blogging is something that has become part of my day to day life. I wake up and check out my daily reads and comment when appropriate. I spend many hours writing my own blog. The Impact of Tile

I am working with a couple to design a kitchen. We met last week to discuss the cabinet layout and design and to get a glimpse at my drafting. As the discussion wrapped up, we started talking about tile for the back splash. I have designed plenty of kitchens and selected tile for lots of back splashes, but I never really thought about how big of an impact tile can have on a space. The area we are designing is a pretty compact condo kitchen. Just one small wall will have tile, but it will make that space look amazing!! Adding a splash or two of color is exactly what that room needs!!

These pictures all show how big of an impact tile can actually have on a room! There are so many different applications, the possibilities are endless!! I don't know about you, but I am ready to get the grout!!! Who's with me???

Feeling a Little Blue???

I can't say that I have ever in my life thought of my favorite color being blue. Not once. It has always seemed so "boyish" to me!! Which I know sounds so weird, but I grew up in an entirely pink room, carpet walls, the whole shabang! So, blue was never a color I entertained growing up. Never wore it, never decorated with it, never owned any blue items. Until now. I have 3 rooms in my home with a shade of blue on the wall. My guest bath is a light shade of sky blue, we call it our "beach bathroom". My dining room is a shade of blue/gray/green. Is that bad of me to say that as a designer?? Oh well, we keep it real here!! It is a weird shade that looks green in some light and blue in others. Not what I was expecting, but I like it just the same. And now my office is a very light shade of gray/blue. Very bright and soothing and a great place to work. I am not sure when my love of blue developed. It came on very suddenly! But I do find myself drawn to things that are the color blue. Maybe it has to do with my husband. He went to the Air Force Academy and their colors are blue and silver, and he loves blue. Maybe it is because of our recent move back to Indiana and my love of the Colts?? I don't know! All I know is that blue is slowly starting to take over my home and it makes me a bit nervous!!!

These pictures are not my home ( I wish)!! But they show great examples of how to use a color and not go overboard with it! Splashes of blue are everywhere in this home. Very clever.

Do You Love Coffee???

I DO!!! I LOVE coffee!! A few years ago, I lived on the stuff, 3-4 cups a day. Which is probably not the best thing, but I couldn't help myself!! As soon as I woke up I was thinking about that hot cup cradled in my little hands. Oh, it is so good!!! I admit, I have given up my 3-4 cup a day habit and usually only have 1-2. (I am so hyper already, anymore than that and I would barely blink all day!) When I am REALLY lucky, we have a bag or two of Jameson Coffee in our house. This is quite possibly the BEST coffee I have ever had!! Jameson Coffee is located in Indiana, however, they ship their goodness all over the world!! Sorry I haven't posted any after (or before) pictures of my new and improved office space!! It looks amazing...but it is still a work in progress for sure!!! I am slowly getting it put back together and trying to make some changes to the "decor". Its fun, but as you ALL know, I struggle with designing for myself!!

I wish I had somewhere warm and fabulous to go this weekend because I would LOVE to wear this!!

So Simple and Yet, So True

This kind of says a lot without really saying much at all!! Sometimes life gets very complicated and overwhelming. Its easy to get hung up on silly stuff. I find myself thinking about the "what ifs" and "should haves". I get lost in a sea of worry and doubt more often than I like to. I am sure most of us have days that we just can't seem to get it together and feel a little off or out of sorts. When I feel that way, I try to remember the BIG picture and think about what is really important. I get my priorities back in line and I "start over".

What do you do when you have those days? What do you do to get it back together???

Deep Drawers VS. Cabinets

I have a new client who wants to do a complete kitchen remodel. YIPPEE!!! I love kitchen remodels!! The current kitchen is pretty nice, decent size cabinets and a pretty good amount of workable space. However, the couple like modern/minimalistic design and the kitchen is FAR from anything modern. The kitchen is in a condo that the couple use as a weekend get-away/vacation home, so the space is somewhat small. However, because it is not the primary residence, they don't have a ton of things to store.

At our first meeting, we discussed the needs and wants as well as the function of the kitchen. They mentioned storing their dishes and pots in drawers rather than cabinets. I have used this application before for pots and large mixing bowls, but never for dishes. I know that it CAN be done and usually works just fine. I wonder though, will they get tired of bending over to pick UP dishes? Will that become bothersome over time and how will that affect the re-sale of the condo someday?

What do you think? Would dish drawers work for you and how you work in the kitchen?

Ok, so MAYBE I am a little bit obsessed with the ocean, the beach, coastal decor and living at the beach. I feel as though I didn't take full advantage of it when we lived in Destin 6 years ago. Oh, memories!! Smelling the salty air, sun on my skin, sand in between my toes!! It is simply divine!!! I love living close to my family and friends again, don't get me wrong, but a small part of me would give anything to live close to the beach again!! At least I can dream and look at pretty beach decor all day long!!

Entryway Make- Over

Do any of you have an area in your home that you know can be better, but you struggle a bit with how to make it better???? Am I the only one??? (Gosh, I hope not!!) That area is my entryway. For about a year, it has been pretty boring and lifeless. Its a good space, and I have a table that is a perfect size for the space, but I just wasn't sure what to put on top of it. I started off with a green and red vase with white flowers from Pier One, a glass globe "thing" from Pottery Barn and a square mirror from Hobby Lobby. I love all of these pieces, but they just weren't doing anything for me as a group. So, I went "shopping" around my house and found other odds and ends to group together and hopefully create a space that says "hi there, welcome to my house, come on in"!!! HEHE!!! I think it finally says that!!

I was given the big "E" as a gift a few years ago and have never found the right home for it. I started there. I bought the starfish on our trip to Destin FL last summer and put them in a glass hurricane. (I LOVE having elements from the ocean and beach around my house as it is my favorite place!!!) The candlesticks were a clearance purchase from Hobby Lobby about 3 or 4 years ago. I never had a good place for them, so they sat on top of a small chest in the family room. (Do you think they need candles?? I king of like them empty.) The green "ball" was a gift this past Christmas. It is a set of three, the other two are in the powder bath. I thought the space could use an dash of color, green works well I think. And of course, I left the mirror. I like to use mirrors in entryways, it makes the space seem larger than it is.

So that is my entryway make over. What do you think?? Does it look better?? What would you add or do differently?? (Please don't say the tile!! I know it needs to go soon! So out of date!!!)

I Love Organization!!!!

I LOVE organization!!! LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!! But I, just like most people, really struggle with it. My home is clean on the surface, but I have a few little cabinets that are "secret" cabinets if you will. I am sure we ALL do. (And if you don't, just lie and tell me you do so I don't feel so bad!!) I am always looking for ways to de-clutter and be more organized in all areas of my life.

And it doesn't hurt that her real name is Meredith!! She makes no apologies for her love of lists, and notebooks, and pretty office supplies.

Organizing other peoples "stuff" is one of my favorite things to do!!! Honestly, is that a little weird or what?? Oh well, I won't apologize for my compulsive habits and my love for the Container Store and Staples!! Its just me!!

Can I Just Take a Nap???

It's been an exciting couple of weeks at our house. The car that I have had since college gave its farewell performance last week. I was actually pretty sad although I haven't driven that car since August (I got a new car, we got rid of hubby's and he took my old car!! WHAT A GUY!!). I shed a few tears for my little green Focus, we have had some really good times. I have driven across the country twice, from Indiana to Florida too many times to count and countless other trips all over the place. We will be donating the old gal and I hope the next owners have as much fun as I did driving it! We actually bought a new car last night!! WOOHOO!! I am thrilled to be done with the search and I am even more thrilled to have a car again!!! I was without last week as the hubby needed it to get to and from work.

Anyway, we drove a little over 2 hours each way last night to get the car. It was a very LATE night for us as we didn't roll back into town until after midnight! And it was snowing like crazy on the way home!! UGH!!! Needless to say, I am a bit tired today and it is still snowing. This is one of those days you wish you could stay in bed ALL day and watch movies and drink hot chocolate!!! Hence the pictures below! I think these beds look SO cozy and inviting!! They are screaming my name right now!!! Oh well, too much to do today to take a nap!!! Must get to work!!!! Hope you all are rested on this fine day!!!

"It's Complicated"

Remember the movie "Somethings Gotta Give"??? Well, if you don't remember the plot, I am SURE you remember the home in the movie!! AH-MAAAA-ZING!!!!! It has to be one of my favorite interiors of all time. Jon Hutman was the production designer on that movie and he has done it AGAIN. Hutman also designed the interiors for the movie "It's Complicated" He is responsible for the film's comfy and casually elegant, California-style interiors. I doubt that the pictures due this film justice, but for now it will have to do. (I actually have yet to see the movie!! It's on my list though!!)

Fresh and Crisp

This family room is so crisp and fresh! I love the color combination of orange, brown and light teal. As I type those colors, it seems a bit odd that they would work together so well!! But they do!!! The white accents really make the room pop and the zebra print rug adds a little element of whimsy!!

I find myself drawn to orange lately. Well, its not really just lately, I did blog about this once before here. Maybe I have found my "signature color" if you will!! Sadly, I don't have one ounce of orange in my home! Maybe I should try and incorporate that somewhere??? Hmmmm....I smell a new project!!!

After years of washing things that I shouldn't wash (dollar bills, lipstick, checks, etc.) I think that a note on my washing machine would be a great idea!! I am not completely familiar with Uppercase Living, but this decal is something that I might need to look into!! Now, off to do some laundry...let's hope I remember to check the pockets today!!! Beach Dreaming

I had a dream the other night about the beach. I was laying in a beach chair, sitting beside the ocean. I could smell the salty air and feel the heat from the sun on my face (I can get sun on my face, it was only a dream!!). I was so relaxed and it was just pure perfection.

Office Make Over

Could You Do It??

So, as I have stated many times in my blog, I am a bit on the traditional side. (I like to call it transitional, but let's stay on topic.) However, I find myself being drawn to very unusual things lately.

Exhibit A: This bath tub which is actually some sort of metal tub. I can't imagine that it is super cozy, but it sure does look cool!! It's very rustic and somewhat "farmhouse" (and you know I am loving that lately). I also love the shower curtain and the rod that it is on.

Now, some of you will say that the room below is not that crazy. I agree, but HELLO it is all pink!! I don't know many people that could pull this room off. Especially me!! I would love it, Hubby, not so much! I love how rich and warm it is. Mixing in a really dark deep brown adds a lot of dimension and pop to the space. I think without the brown it would look to "sweet" and boring. The fabric and accessories are amazing as well.

So what do you think?? Could you do it? Could you pull off either of these rooms??

Dark Grout, White Tile????

I would say my design style is somewhat traditional. I like to call it transitional actually, a nice mix between traditional and contemporary. I have ALWAYS been very traditional when it comes to picking the grout color for tile. I always pick a color that blends in with the tile, that doesn't stand out or look strange. When I came accross these pictures of white subway tile and dark grout, I was intrigued a wee bit. This is quite the departure for me in the world of tile and grout. But I gotta say, I kinda dig it!!! I could see myself suggesting this for a client sometime! What a great way to add a little spice to plain old tile!! Maybe I'm not so traditional after all???

Etsy is my new addiction. Is that bad?? I can "window shop" in my pj's!! Its so great!!! Its simply amazing how many talented people there are out there!!

Anyway, while browsing the other day, I started seeing a lot of name plaques. I love name plaques, they are such a neat and inexpensive way to really add a personal touch to a room. Last name or first, they are great for babies rooms, living rooms, game rooms, anywhere really!! Wouldn't they make great wedding gifts for a newly married couple?? Or a fun shower gift for a new baby!

Re-Visiting Past Projects

Sometimes I like to take a look at some of my previous projects to evaluate where I am now and how my design has evolved and changed. As I was looking at photos, I thought this would be a good time to share some of my previous work with you! This project is one of my favorites!!! I was able to design/draft the cabinetry, space plan, help make finish selections, fabric selections for the window treatments, the whole thing!! Earlier this week I had an e-mail from Tiffany. Tiffany has some "issues" as she called it, around her house that she wanted some help with. I was happy to offer her some advice and hopefully help this busy mom create a living room she loves!! Here is Tiffany's original e-mail:

Hi Meredith!

I am attaching pics of my ISSUE! I have thing ginormous wall in my living room that is about 25 feet long. It attaches a sitting area off the living room which is just off the kitchen. I have been LOST with what to do with that dang long wall. I've been collecting old frames in hopes to replicate a Blueprint Mag cover from a few years ago. I think this LONG wall may be the perfect spot for them...what do you think? I attached a pic of some of them....I'd say I have 15 or so. I planned on painting them all the same color...is that a good idea? SHould I add an accent color since I really don't have one in the room in question? We recently got a new tv so some changes are coming with it's "home"! Can't decide on a stand or entertainment center??? As far as the curtains these were changed from the dining room so I am on a hunt to find brown fabric to add to the bottoms so the lay on the floor. The ceiling fan....we don't really use it just the light. It hangs in a spot where if something is too long heads will hit it. I'm in no hurry....except on the issue of the TV stand or center....so take your time!!!

Tiffany sent a few pictures of her space (which was lovely by the way) and I tried to give her a few suggestions. Here was my e-mail to her:

Tiffany-

Hi there!! Good to hear from you!!!

First off, which tv is staying?? The flat screen or the large one on the floor?? I love being able to close a cabinet and hide a tv when company comes. However, I don't have a cabinet myself, we use an old antique dresser that I took a drawer out of for the cable box. At first I was not happy about this compromise when we moved into our new house last year. We had a beautiful armoire that was WAY too big for any house we have ever lived in, so I got rid of it. Rather than spend a thousand bucks on a cabinet, I am using my husband's grandparents old dresser. It looks vintage and cool and completes the "farmhouse" feel in my home. I am not opposed to buying a great armoire however, it does cross my mind from time to time!! I will attach a few links to cabinets that I like that are reasonably priced.

As for the curtains, yes, please attach brown fabric to the bottom!! And maybe to the sides of the panels for a border. You need some more depth on that side of the room. The colors are great, you just have a lot of it. On the other side of the room where you have the leather chairs, you might want to do that same thing with the curtains. And maybe add some pillows to the chairs that have a different color rather than brown. Maybe a deep red or plum would be nice. Once you add a splash of color, you can do it other places as well and it will be easier to add color. You have great bones, you just need a little pizazz!!! I see you have a baby and I know pizazz can be hard!!! But if you do it with pillows or a throw over the sofa, it is pretty easy.

Do you all have a coffee table?? I am sure with the baby it is hard to do. Someday, I would suggest adding one. It would make the area seem a bit more cozy.

As for the picture frames...LOVE IT!!! I suggest painting them either the deep red or plum color I mentioned before. Adding that color to the wall will make the brown walls really pop. I would also find some funky 3 dimensional items to put inside some of the frames. Nothing too crazy, maybe some old vintage pieces of wood or glass. If you collect something that could be hung on the wall, this might be fun. Or maybe frame pictures of your baby and put those inside the frames (smaller frames inside big frames, might be neat!). Or just leave them empty. Mix up the sizes and shapes and get creative. Be sure to lay them out on the floor first to see what pattern you want them in. And then put post-its on the wall of where you want them to hang. Its an easy visual and easy top take down and move around and play with.

You asked about an accent wall. I am not a big fan of doing this, but in your case it would work as you have that huge wall. I would do a shade of the current color a few shades darker. If you paint the frames dark, you want those to pop, so the wall shouldn't be too dark. But it could use a bit of a contrasting shade for sure. If you let me know the color and manufacturer of the current paint, I can specify a color for you!!

My Living Room, the Never Ending Saga

Now that the holidays are over and I can focus again, I am back to my same dilemma...MY LIVING ROOM!!!! UGH! It is quite the love/hate relationship I must say. I love that I have the space to do something really fabulous in, but I hate that I can't come up with anything fabulous to put in it!!! I have no problem doing this for my clients, but when it comes to my own home, I really struggle!!! It is so permanent and I have to live with it!! Now I really know how my clients must feel!!! Someday, I will have furniture and accessories in the formal living room, I will blog about it and it will be fantastic!!! That will be a great day!!! Oh, until then, here are some living rooms that I am dreaming about today. What rooms would you like to work on??? Are you stumped??? Let me know, I can actually help you!! Unlike myself!!! HEHE!!!

Pottery Barn Introduces Farmhouse??? WHAT???

Have any of you been to Pottery Barn lately? Or visited their website?? I was a little intrigued when I got my last catalog in the mail. Farmhouse at Pottery barn??? Could this be true?? I was shocked when I went to www.potterybarn.com and saw that it is in fact true!!! For those of you who know me, you know this is totally my style. Although, I have a hard time referring to my style as "Farmhouse" being that I do not, nor have I ever lived on a farm. I really don't think I would do so well on a farm to be honest. Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I love this look (whatever it may be called) and I am so excited that Pottery Barn is creating items that fit the bill. Here are a few of the items I considered "drool worthy" from their website. Enjoy!!

(I love Pottery Barn, however, I feel that some of these items could be found at antique stores or flea markets. I think the reproductions are fantastic, but sometimes I like the "hunt". So, use these pictures for inspiration. Who knows what you can find when you really look!!!)

This is my FAVORITE picture. I love the blue paint they used with the crisp black frames. I also LOVE all the natural elements, very earthy.

I LOVE quilts, I can't have enough of them!!!

Old wore baskets are great for storage in the kitchen. They can hold a lot and are super sturdy. However, I think if you searched hard enough, you could find these at an antique shop or flea market.

Pretty light. This would be great in a kitchen over a table or island.

More quilts, I can't help myself!!

Old iron chairs are great for displaying things just like they have here. I bet we all have one or two old chairs around that we could fix up and put on a porch, or even hang on a wall??!!

Now, these look fab! But I REALLY think these could be found at a flea market (or the back of your cabinets??)!! But they look great!!!

Again, another item I bet we could find elsewhere. (And I am SURE for a fraction of the cost!!!)

I love this home!! I love every little square inch of it!! And it's for sale!!!! Can you believe that?? Now, I just need to find a way to move to Rosemary Beach Florida, and it can be all mine!!! I love Rosemary Beach to!!! UGH!

Anyway, I thought this home had a lot of clever things going on. Funky lights, interesting headboards, those amazing wooden benches at the foot of all the beds. I keep looking at the pictures over and over again thinking I have missed something!

This house is subtle and understated with lots of fun touches. A great example of good classic design!! Yeah!! Now, who wants to buy this house for me??? Anybody?? Hello???

Etsy Finds

Do any of you shop on etsy?? Etsy is a new obsession of mine. Not only do I love to look for fun vintage finds (like my pics below) but I love looking at all the handmade items (especially now that I am sewing). I find myself on etsy probably a little to often during the course of the day. But how could you not get lost in the search for treasures??!! I found all the items below in this shop http://www.etsy.com/shop/oldcrowfarm Old Crow Farm. They turn everyday junk into "treasures". I love funky vintage finds like these. It is fun to mix in a few cool vintage pieces with your "everyday" items. My house is full of little odds and ends like these.

My little angel is turning 7 today!! I can't believe I have been a doggie mama for 7 whole years!! I can't imagine what my life was like before Oliver. Probably pretty boring!! This little guy is such great entertainment!! He is such a sweet little pup and Grant and I are truly blessed that he is in our lives!!

(Is it weird that we have so many pictures of him?? I can only imagine what it will be like when we have a baby!!! Oh my word. We love to take pictures!!!! HEHE!!!)

So Simple!!

I have a lot of people ask me what they can do with old picture frames. I think this idea is perfect! Easy and simple and it looks great! Simply gather up some old frames, paint them all the same color and group them together on the wall. Be sure to use a lot of different sizes to add interest. Can it get any easier??!!! What do you think about this idea??

Color of The Year?????

I woke up early today with this amazing feeling, ready to start my day in a new year and a new decade! I have had a week and a half off with my sweet husband and I am rejuvenated and motivated to get back to work!

I usually begin my work day checking and answering e-mails and checking in on my favorite blogs. I was a little shocked to find 4 of my fav blogs showcasing a color that I am usually completely turned off by. A color that I find a bit offensive when used in large doses. A color that I put in the "never use in a million years" category. The color MUSTARD YELLOW!!!!! I know, I am being a bit over dramatic, but I really just don't like this color, USUALLY. (I have some serious issues with it actually. My living room and dining room were painted this color when we moved in our house. Almost a deal breaker for me!!)

You can imagine my surprise when I kind of felt a spark when I saw this color used in small tasteful ways. As a designer, I know it is my job to step out of the box and explore color, but this one has always been hard for me. But now, I find myself enjoying this color (a little bit).

I guess I should try and branch out a little bit with color this year, make it one of my goals. But do you think mustard yellow will be the "IN" color this year??? Anyone have any predictions for what the "in" color of the year will be??? I'd love to know your thoughts!!!

**This post is not meant to offend any of you who love mustard yellow. I am just giving my opinion. I am in no way telling you that using this color is bad or wrong, I personally just don't like it. **

New Years Goals and Reflections

I think I am one of those people who makes resolutions every year on January 1st. I have the best intentions to keep them, I think about them for at least a good day or two and then I suddenly forget that I made them and then it is a year later and I am making resolutions again!! (Maybe that should be my resolution this year, to keep my resolutions from previous years!) Anyway, I decided that maybe this year it was better for me just to make goals for myself and try to accomplish them instead of resolving to do them. Accomplishing something sounds much better and more attainable anyway. I am not going to share ALL of my goals with you, (I have to maintain some of my privacy here!) but I will share a few of the BIG personal goals as well as design/business goals I have for 2010.

Personal Goals:

To not let my fear get in the way of trying new things. (Hence the picture up above!)
To live in the present moment instead of worrying about the future and/or the past.
RELAX and not try to control EVERYTHING in my life. If this past year has taught me anything, it is that I really have NO control over some of the things in my life.
Find hobbies and things to get involved in that I am passionate about and enjoy. (I do have a new hobby,sewing! I love it!!)
Get creative with cooking. (Sorry for the blah meals lately Grant!!)
Appreciate what I have rather than feeling bad about what I don't have. I have it pretty good right now!!!
Be a better wife and friend!! I love my husband more than words, I think he knows it!! I hope!!)
To be nicer to myself. I am extremely hard on myself and it is time that I love myself to!!!
Become a mom!

Design/Business

GET MORE CLIENTS!!! I know you are out there!!!!
Grow my blog. Finally get 100 followers and make it something people really look forward to reading each day.
Blog every day (well, 5 days a week for sure!). And blog about topics that my readers really want to read about.
Get more creative with my own home and the way I decorate it.
Beef up my marketing and get more serious about it.
Get more organized in my office!! (It's in a sad state right at the moment.)
Offer new and exciting services to my clients.

Of course, I could go on for days about the goals I would like to accomplish, however, I will spare you and keep the rest for myself. I have a pretty busy year ahead of me!!

Over the past 10 years so much in my life has changed. I graduated from college, I moved to Florida, I got married and moved to California, two years later we moved to Minnesota and then 2 years after that we moved back to Indiana! Whew! That's a lot of moving! I am now 31 years old (pass the eye wrinkle cream) and I am a married woman. The 21 year old Meredith seems like a baby to me. I realize that I am not THAT old, but I have definitely grown and matured over the past decade (if you are laughing right now, I am hurt!). When I think back to my 21st year, I have so many found memories (a lot of which I cannot discuss here, but hey, I was 21!!). But I don't think I could handle being 21 again! I like where I am right now. I like that I am settled and married to an amazing man that I hope to have lots of babies with. I like that I live so close to my family and friends and we can see each other whenever we want. I like that I own my own business and have been successful with it. Life is so good and I am so blessed now, there are not many things I would change. The past 10 years have been good to me for the most part. I have learned a lot about myself and who I am and who I want to be as I grow. I have had struggles and challenges a long the way, but they have made me who I am today, I am stronger for it. The past 10 years have allowed me to move all over the country, see places I had never seen before and be challenged in ways I never expected. What a blessing!! If the past 10 years have been this good, I can only imagine how amazing the next 10 will be!!

I am so excited to start a new year and a new decade with hope in my heart and love all around me. I am excited to accomplish ALL of my goals for this year!!!! I hope all of you are ready to start an amazing year with me!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Christmas Break Ramble

I wish I had something really fabulous to say here...Unfortunately, I do not! I am still enjoying my Christmas break. (I have decided that we should ALWAYS have Christmas break even if we aren't in school!!) Anyway, as I was saying, I am still enjoying my break. My husband is off from work all this week and hopefully we will find some fun things to do. Too bad we both have not been feeling so great! But, today we both started to feel somewhat normal again, so I think there is hope for the end of the week!!!

We celebrated Christmas last week with my parents and it was wonderful!!! Spending all of Christmas day in my jammies watching movies with the ones I love!!! Can it get any better that that??? (It can, I got some really beautiful bedding from my parents!! Thanks mom and dad!!) To make the holidays even better, we had the most beautiful snow on Sunday and actually got semi-snowed in Sunday evening. We celebrated the snow with "Ultimate" grilled cheese sandwiches, the perfect cold weather meal. Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday and this year was perfection!!

On a sad note, I took my decorations down today. I usually wait until January 1, but I started to take a few things down and just didn't want to stop. So, my house is extremely sad and I am sad as well. I love the lights and the reds and the greens. I love all the decorations I have collected over the years. At least it is less than a year before I can take them out again!!! WOOHOO!!

I am really looking forward to the New Year. Not that 2009 was a great a year, but I have a feeling that 2010 will be even better!!! I have so many things to accomplish this year, I can hardly stand it!!! I guess I need to get started on my list of resolutions and my goals for the year. Do any of you do that??

Well dear blogger friends, I hope you are enjoying your "Christmas break" as much as I am. What do you like to do on break??? Sit in your jammies until noon (or dinner, whatever I won't judge) watch movies, drink hot chocolate and read a book???
